Golden Gate Fishermen’s Association,

June was once again a busy and exciting month for the Golden Gate Fisherman’s Association. The much-anticipated salmon opener on June 7th and 8th brought a wave of enthusiasm, with member boats thrilled to be back on the water doing what they love most—salmon fishing. The action did not disappoint. Fishing was nothing short of phenomenal, and it’s estimated that an impressive 9,165 salmon were caught statewide during the opener.

While the Department made the decision to close the remaining summer dates, there’s still good news on the horizon. Salmon fishing will reopen in September with a new quota of 7,500 fish allocated to the Point Reyes to Point Sur subarea. If that quota isn’t fully met, additional fishing days may be available in October for the Point Reyes to Pigeon Point subarea.

We are also pleased to announce that in the month of June, the Golden Gate Fisherman’s Association (GGFA) officially became an affiliate of the Sportfishing Association of California (SAC). This partnership creates a single, unified voice in many important arenas for our California Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessel (CPFV) community. While SAC and GGFA have worked closely together on state and federal matters for years, this step makes the collaboration formal and official.

Founded in 1948, GGFA represents members from the California-Oregon border to Monterey. SAC, established in 1972, includes members from Santa Barbara to San Diego. With GGFA now under the SAC umbrella, membership now spans the entire California coast—creating a truly statewide network of CPFV representation.

GGFA Board Member Tim Klassen has been working tirelessly throughout the month, continuing to advocate for our rockfish fishery. Tim has attended multiple council meetings, pushing for expanded access and fair management. We remain optimistic that, thanks to efforts like his, we may soon see all state waters reopened to rockfishing.

In addition, GGFA President Michael Rescino and Treasurer Jared Davis traveled to San Diego to meet with SAC and the Department to discuss the implementation of electronic logbooks for CPFV vessels. They provided valuable feedback and suggestions aimed at making the system more efficient and user-friendly for our fleet.

GGFA continues to fight tirelessly for our fisheries, our access, and our fleet. We thank each and every one of our members for your ongoing support.

Thank you,

Golden Gate Fishermen’s Association
