These are the good old days...my how things have changed from fishing the Revillagigedo Islands. This new standard in Cow fishing has leveled the playing field. Fishing 130 pound test with 50 size reels on the windy side of the boat makes it fair for even the novice angler.

This new world standard is so much cleaner than "old school" cow fishing, by drifting albacore style you eliminate so many negative variables. There are no concerns of slack tide causing you to wrap the anchor line or getting "rocked" on the reef. You don't have to worry about sharks eating your 250 pounder after an hour battle or biting every salami you throw in the water costing you 20 dollars in hooks per night. No more staying up and fishing for bait until well beyond midnight fighting with sharks stealing your baits along with your expensive sabiki rig. The days are gone that would require you to wake up at 3 AM for the opportunity to hook and land a cow.

Many thought that the days days of trophy cow fishing ended with the closure of the Islands -- little did we know that the best was yet to come. These trips should not be taken for granted. In years past we would consider 6-12 fish over 200 a great trip. Now that's considered a "decent" DAY of fishing. If you were lucky enough to hook, let alone land a 175-200 pound fish that would be a good trip. This is truly an extraordinary experience when every bait cast could produce a 200+ pound fish.

I have been waiting almost twenty years for a trip like this, so every bite, every tail beat and every circling tuna was cherished and appreciated to its fullest. What a shame it would be to not savor the opportunities this year has brought us. Yes these are truly the good old days.
